The Secrets of Serving Together

So Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade decided to team up together in Miami. (If you have no idea who those guys are, don’t be afraid. Keep reading). Yes, those three basketball superstars decided to join together with the NBA team the Miami Heat. Like the Galacticos of Real Madrid, these three basketball players have decided to form their own Galacticos (or Superfriends) of the National Basketball Association.

But what we’ve seen from Real Madrid’s Galacticos, is that having the best talent on the team isn’t a guarantee for success. The basketball analysts are already beginning to discuss whether these three superstars are going to be able to play together. To achieve the best team synergy is going to require teamwork, humility, and the ability to communicate with one another. In many ways, sacrificing personal goals and ambitions for the sake of the team as a whole.

Serving together in the Kingdom of God might reflect some of those attributes. Humility, patience, self-sacrifice, teamwork. But there’s something different that separates the kingdom of God. The body of Christ doesn’t rely on the most talented, or the most personally gifted in the group. In fact, everyone in the body of Christ plays a role. And when one person chooses not to, the whole body struggles.

One of the secrets to serving together in the body of Christ, is making an active decision to serve. To serve your brothers and sisters in the congregation. Does it require a commitment of time? Yes. Does it require a commitment of energy? Yes. But the realisation is that you are not committing to a job, or to a responsibility – but you are committing to Christ and to one another. It is one thing to recite the greatest commandment – to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbour as yourself – but it’s another thing to actively live it.

Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Is it time you committed to serving?

These were some thoughts from the fifth message in our summer series, Life Together. You can find all our messages as well as the worship at the BCEC Sermon Page or listen to the sermon directly – The Secrets of Serving Together.
